Veterinary Virtual Care Association Formed
Making Virtual Care a Standard of Practice in Veterinary Medicine
While the sudden demand for veterinary virtual care seems to be a direct result of the pandemic, the reality is the profession has been witnessing the evolution of telemedicine in human health over the past 30 years. However, the recent surge has created a new environment full of confusion. To help the profession navigate how to implement virtual care into practice, a new nonprofit organization has been formed, the Veterinary Virtual Care Association (VVCA). This new global, nonprofit association is dedicated to developing best practices for delivering virtual care for animals, defining quality standards and protocols for practicing virtual care, sharing experiences among practice teams, engaging with virtual care providers and advocating for policies in support of quality virtual care.
“In today’s world, virtual care is an essential tool for ensuring every animal around the world has access to safe, appropriate and effective veterinary care,” says Dr. Eleanor Green, founding member of VVCA. “By reaching out to all the thought leaders in the profession in one arena, VVCA will take virtual care to the next level in a responsible, accelerated and most importantly effective manner.”
Founded by Mark Cushing, Dr. Cheryl Good, Dr. Eleanor Green, Dr. Jason Johnson, Dr. Charlotte Lacroix, Deb Leon, Dr. Kerri Marshall, Dr. Aaron Smiley, Bruce Truman, Dr. Jessica Vogelsang and Dr. Audrey Wystrach, the VVCA will advocate best practices, provide educational resources, and create a space for a wide alliance of professionals to congregate and accelerate the adoption of virtual care (telehealth, telemedicine, telemonitoring, teletriage, etc.) within veterinary medicine.
“Implementation and adoption of virtual care comes from every corner of this profession from academia, private practice, corporate practices, technicians, veterinarians and industry professionals,” says Dr. Jason Johnson, founding member of the VVCA. “It is critically important for every member of this profession to come together to define what the future of veterinary virtual care looks like.”
The VVCA is a membership-based organization open to all students, veterinarians, practices, allied organizations and technology providers. The VVCA will partner with industry leaders, licensed professionals and technology platforms to find innovative solutions to transform how veterinarians bring high-quality, convenient and affordable care in every community.
