Spectrum of Care Looms Large in Debate over Access to Care
Mark Cushing of the Animal Policy Group explores the growing relevance of “Spectrum of Care” in veterinary medicine in his latest column for Animal Health News and Views. While nearly every organization now acknowledges the term, Cushing argues that few take meaningful action to support its implementation.
At the heart of the issue is whether veterinarians can confidently offer less expensive, medically appropriate options—below the “Gold Standard of Care”—without fearing disciplinary action from state boards. The concern, Cushing notes, is especially urgent in light of data showing that many pet owners skip or decline care due to cost, and are rarely offered alternatives.
He calls on the profession to legitimize a broader range of care options through updated regulations and practice acts, ensuring that veterinarians can meet clients where they are financially—while still providing ethical, effective treatment.
